
Balananda Sharma

Balananda Sharma was born in Kushma Municipality-10, Pipal Taar, Parbat. He completed his early schooling up to Grade 7 at Purneshwar Secondary School, Bitalab, and Grade 8–10 at Janata Sudarshan Secondary School, Thulipokhari. After passing SLC in 1979, he moved to Kathmandu, where he completed IA in Education from Sanothimi Campus, followed by B.Com and MBA from Saraswati Campus. He also pursued BL and a Master’s in Public Administration through self-study.
Sharma began his professional journey as a teacher and later entered government service via Nepal Rastra Bank. In 1988, he joined the civil service as Section Officer, was promoted to Under-Secretary in 1996, Joint Secretary in 1997, and became Secretary in 2007 at the age of 43. During his tenure, he led the Ministry of Education, Ministry of General Administration, Ministry of Energy, and Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Welfare.
After retiring in 2012, Sharma was appointed Chairperson of the Local Level Restructuring Commission, where he successfully executed the restructuring of Nepal’s local bodies into 753 units under the Constitution of Nepal 2015. He later served as the Chairperson of the Natural Resources and Fiscal Commission for five years. His contributions in government service and beyond remain highly significant for the nation and for his home district of Parbat.
